Can You Mix Appliance Finishes? Advice & Tips

February 25, 2022

Your kitchen is one of the most frequented rooms in your home. Even though the space is intended to be used for cooking and eating meals, it does not need to feel like the workhorse of your home. Kitchens should be much more – a place of leisure, gathering, and creating memories that last a lifetime.

Not only should your kitchen be a place for your family and guests to enjoy together, but it should also represent your unique style. If you want your kitchen to express your individual style, mixing appliance finishes can be a great way to do so.

Can You Mix Appliance Finishes?

If you are considering mixing appliance finishes, we recommend doing so. There are a few general rules of thumb we recommend following and things to consider first. This is not a decision you want to take lightly.

Things to Take into Consideration

Price

Appliances can be a costly investment and many appliances last for ten or more years. Make sure you select a finish and model that you will love for years to come. You do not want to regret your style choice a year or two down the road.

Consider Color

Colorful appliances have made their comeback within the last year. You can find appliances in various shades of green, reds, oranges, grays, and more. But it does not stop there. Ask a product specialist at Howard's for our colorful recommendations.

Some of our favorite ranges in bright colors include:

Style

How do you want to feel when you walk into your kitchen? If you are looking for a calming environment, you may want to avoid an energizing color such as red or orange. Light blue appliances, on the other hand, can give off a very calming vibe.

If you want a high-end feel to your kitchen, accents or a centerpiece appliance may be the way to go.

Rules of Thumb to Follow

Limit the Number of Finishes

We highly recommend limiting the number of different finishes in your kitchen to 2 or 3 at most. Take your light fixtures, faucet, and cabinet pulls into consideration as well.

If you are planning to use multiple metals in your kitchen, make sure they complement each other well. Nickel and stainless steel, for example, look too similar to one another to look good together in many people's opinion.

We recommend shopping in person to see how multiple finishes look paired together or browsing Pinterest for ideas before shopping.

Avoid Shades of the Same Color

Avoid adding appliances with similar, but not matching finishes. For example, we do not recommend having white and off-white appliances in the same space or white cabinets with off-white appliances. Finishes that look too similar can leave one shade looking dingy or washed out.

Consider a Centerpiece Appliance

If you have your eye on a high-end appliance that is more a piece of artwork than a refrigerator or stove, we recommend using that as the sole centerpiece for your kitchen.

Choose other appliances with minimal features or neutral colors. Black stainless steel, white, or matte finishes can be great accents to a centerpiece without stealing the show.

Having too many flashy appliances drawing attention in your kitchen can make for an overwhelming look.

Accent with Other Decor

If you want to add a bright-colored appliance to your kitchen, consider completing the look with accents of the same color in the space. Whether it be a rug, backsplash, or wall decor, you can really pull together a design with simple, small accent pieces.

Hesitant to Make the Change? Start Small

Small kitchen appliances offer more creative flexibility with less commitment. Enhance your kitchen’s design with a small kitchen appliance such as a coffee maker or food processor, and experiment with colors and finishes on a smaller scale.
