A washer and dryer set is an essential part of any household. Getting a new washer and dryer set is exciting, but it is vital to ensure they are installed and leveled properly. Why Is Leveling a Washer & Dryer Important?

Before we dive into the steps to level a washer and dryer, it is important to understand why leveling your washer and dryer set is crucial. There are several reasons why this is vital, including the following.

  • When a machine is not level, it can cause excessive vibration and noise, which can be disruptive and annoying.
  • This can also lead to damage to the machines, as they are not able to function properly when they are not level.
  • Additionally, an unlevel washer and dryer can cause damage to your laundry room floors, as the machines may shift and cause scratches or dents.

Signs Your Washer & Dryer Are Unlevel

Leveling your washer and dryer is important during installation but they can also become unlevel over time. Some signs that your washer and/or dryer may be unlevel include:

  1. Excessive vibration and noise: If your machine is not level, it can cause excessive shaking, vibrating, and noise during operation. This can be disruptive and annoying, especially if the machines are in a living space. If you notice your washer or dryer shaking, it may be time to level them.
  2. Uneven spinning or movement: An unlevel washer or dryer may spin unevenly or move around during operation. This can result in clothes not being properly cleaned or dried, as the machines are not able to function optimally.
  3. Doors not closing properly: When a washer or dryer is not level, the front load doors may not close properly or may swing open during operation. This can be a safety hazard and may also cause damage to the machines if the doors are not securely closed.
  4. Water pooling or leaking: If your washer is not level, it may not drain properly, leading to water pooling or leaking from the machine. This can cause damage to your floors and surrounding areas.
  5. Uneven wear on the machine: An unlevel washer or dryer may cause uneven wear on the machine itself. This can result in parts wearing out faster and potentially lead to costly repairs or replacements.

It is important to regularly check the levelness of your washer and dryer to ensure optimal performance and prevent any potential issues.

Tools You Will Need

Before you begin the leveling process, make sure you have the following tools on hand:

  • A level
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Shims(if needed)

Steps to Level Your Washer & Dryer Set

We suggest following these steps to level a washing machine and dryer.

  1. Start by unplugging both the washer and dryer from their power sources.
  2. Use the level to check the levelness of the machines. Place the level on top of the washer and dryer, in both the front-to-back and side-to-side directions. If the bubble on the level is not centered, the machine is not level.
  3. Using your wrench, loosen the locking nuts on the feet of the washer and dryer so you will be able to adjust the height.
  4. Adjust the feet of the machines by turning them clockwise or counterclockwise until the bubble on the level is centered.
  5. Once the machines are level, use the adjustable wrench to tighten the locking nuts on the feet to secure them in place.
  6. Check the levelness of the machines again to ensure they are still level after tightening the locking nuts.
  7. If the machines are still not level, you may need to use shims to fill in any gaps between the feet and the floor. Place the shims under the feet and check the levelness again.
  8. Once the machines are level, plug them back in and test them to make sure they are functioning properly.

Keep Up With Regular Maintenance

Once your washer and dryer set are properly leveled, it is important to keep up with regular maintenance and regularly ensure they remain level. In addition to checking every few months to ensure your machines are level, we suggest the following tips.

Washing Machine Maintenance & Care Tips

Regularly cleaning and maintaining your washing machine is crucial for its optimal performance and longevity. Neglecting to do so can lead to various issues such as poor results, foul odors, and even damage to the machine. Here are four simple tips to help you keep your washing machine in top shape:

  • Clean the detergent dispenser: Over time, detergent residue and fabric softener can build up in the dispenser drawer, leading to clogs and mold growth. To prevent this, remove the dispenser drawer and wash it with warm soapy water. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away any stubborn residue.
  • Run a monthly cleaning cycle: Even if your washing machine appears clean, there can be hidden dirt, bacteria, and mold lurking in hard-to-reach areas. Running a monthly cleaning cycle will help eliminate these contaminants.
  • Wipe down the door seal: The rubber door seal can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew due to the moisture that accumulates after each wash. Regularly wipe down the seal with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or residue. For stubborn mold, use a mixture of water and vinegar to disinfect the area.
  • Leave the door open after use: After each wash, it's a good practice to leave the washing machine door open for a while. This allows the machine to air out and prevents moisture buildup, which can lead to unpleasant odors and mold growth.

Dryer Maintenance & Care Tips

Regularly cleaning your dryer is important for several reasons. Regular dryer maintenance is crucial for maintaining efficiency, preventing lint buildup, and extending the lifespan of the machine. Here are four tips for maintaining and cleaning your dryer:

  1. Clean the lint filter: The lint filter should be cleaned after every load of laundry. Removing the lint buildup improves airflow and helps the dryer work more efficiently. Simply remove the filter, scrape off the lint, and rinse it under running water. Allow it to dry completely before putting it back in the dryer.
  2. Vacuum the lint trap and exhaust vent: In addition to cleaning the lint filter, it is important to vacuum the lint trap and exhaust vent regularly. Use a vacuum cleaner with a long, narrow attachment to remove any lint that may have accumulated in these areas. This will further improve airflow and reduce the risk of a fire.
  3. Clean the dryer drum: Over time, the dryer drum can accumulate residue from fabric softener and dryer sheets. This residue can transfer to your clothes and affect their appearance and smell. Wipe the drum with a damp cloth and mild detergent to clean it. Be sure to dry it thoroughly before using the dryer again.
  4. Check the dryer vent and exhaust duct: The dryer vent and exhaust duct should be inspected at least once a year to ensure they are free of lint and debris. A clogged vent can restrict airflow and increase the risk of a fire. If you notice any blockages, use a vent brush or professional dryer vent cleaning kit to remove the buildup.
